Microfibre detergent is a special liquid detergent for microfibre cloths and, depending on the manufacturer, for polishing pads. Manufacturers develop it to target residues from wax, polishing oil, detailers, and coatings that get trapped in the pile. It should be used without fabric softener. One example is the SONAX PROFILINE Microfibre Wash, which SONAX specifies for both cloths and polishing pads.
For cloths that have only been used with water, glass cleaner, or light dust, Meguiar's and ZOLLNER suggest that an additive-free liquid detergent is often sufficient. If the cloth contains wax, detailer, polish, or coating, CarPro, SONAX, and The Rag Company recommend a specialized detergent. There is no independent comparison test for both methods, so the level of residue in the cloth should be the deciding factor.
The lower temperature recommended by either the detergent or the cloth label applies. SONAX specifies 40 °C on a delicate cycle, INNOVACAR a maximum of 30 °C, and CarPro 40 to 60 °C on a gentle cycle. THE COLLECTION approves its cloths for up to 60 °C. Our guide Washing microfibre cloths covers the cycle, drying, and fabric softener in detail.
Follow the manufacturer's table, not the measuring cup for household detergent. SONAX refers to its mixing table and states that one litre of the high concentrate is sufficient for 50 washes. For heavy soiling, SONAX recommends soaking the cloths in warm water with 50 ml of detergent. Overdosing is counterproductive, as detergent residue in the cloth will leave a film on paintwork and glass.
Only if both the detergent and the pad allow it. CarPro approves its product for pads, using 50 ml in 10 litres of water and a soaking time of at least one hour. INNOVACAR recommends hand washing for pads. Koch-Chemie advises against machine washing because the adhesive can come loose. You should never wash cloths and pads together.
According to manufacturers, microfibre detergent dissolves wax and detailer residues, especially after soaking heavily soiled cloths. However, cured coating residues cannot be washed out indefinitely. Therefore, cloths that have been used to remove a coating should be placed in warm water with detergent immediately after use, rather than left in the laundry basket until the next wash day.
