Leather Repair Complete Set for Tears, Seat Bolsters, and Steering Wheels in One Box

What is the COLOURLOCK Complete Leather Repair Set? A complete leather repair kit with mild cleaner, degreaser, flexible liquid leather for filling, opaque Leather Fresh dye, protective Leather Shield sealant, and conditioning Leather Protector. Developed for structural repair and color refreshment on pigmented smooth leather. Not suitable for aniline leather, nubuck, suede, or Alcantara.

The COLOURLOCK Complete Leather Repair Set is a complete leather repair kit from Koch-Chemie × COLOURLOCK from the Lederzentrum factory in Unna, which bundles the four phases of professional leather restoration in one box: cleaning, mechanical repair, repigmentation, and long-term protection. The core of the system is the combination of flexible liquid leather filler for tears and the water-based Leather Fresh dye, which physically anchors itself in the leather fibers when dried warm. Instead of having the entire upholstery re-covered by an upholsterer, you rebuild substance and color layer by layer.

  • A re-upholstery by an upholsterer costs many times more than the set. The complete set addresses steering wheels, seat bolsters, gear knobs, and worn-out cover surfaces in one workflow. When preparing a used car, the investment pays for itself with the first sale, because the steering wheel in the listing image is the first impression for the buyer.
  • Flexible liquid leather and water-based leather dye in one system. The liquid leather remains permanently elastic after curing and follows every movement of the seat bolster, instead of breaking open again at the first entry. The Leather Fresh leather dye dries to an abrasion-resistant, pigmented film that bonds with the leather pores when blow-dried warm. Result: your repair feels like original leather.
  • Six coordinated steps from cleaning to conditioning. Cleaner Mild gently opens the pores, the degreaser frees the surface from skin oils, the liquid leather fills tears flush, the Leather Fresh leather dye applies the tint in thin layers, the Leather Shield sealant repels jean dye transfer and friction, and the Leather Protector with medical care oil conditions older leather against drying out.

Practical tip from Detailing1: From our experience, we see the same mistake again and again — the fresh tint peels off after a few weeks because the degreasing step was skipped or performed too briefly. The simple rule: after Cleaner Mild, always follow up with the degreaser and rub the top coat until the surface appears visibly dull and is slightly sticky to the touch. Only this dissolution ensures that the new paint layer adheres. Otherwise, skin oils or residues of old leather care act like a release film and block the bonding — even on a visually clean steering wheel. Those who save time here will pay for it twice when reworking.

From Tears to a Controlled Restored Seat in Six Steps

Restoration with the set follows a fixed six-step process that is non-negotiable in this order. Skipping a step risks a peeling tint, chipped areas, or a cloudy finish.

Step 1: Foam cleaning with Cleaner Mild. Fill the foam dispenser, apply foam with a leather brush or sponge, and work in seam-to-seam movements for 30 to 60 seconds. Remove with a damp viscose cloth. Never use abrasive microfiber cloths from paint preparation — they scratch the protective top coat layer of the leather.

Step 2: Mechanical preparation and degreasing. Rub the dissolving degreaser on a lint-free cloth until the surface becomes dull and sticky to the touch. For heavily used steering wheels with ingrained hand grease residues, this can take five to ten minutes. Never use brake cleaner as a cheap alternative — it leaches the natural leather material and makes it brittle. Gently break rough edges or protruding fibers with the enclosed sanding pad, vacuum up sanding dust.

Step 3: Structural repair with liquid leather. Deeper tears and cracks are filled flush with the tinted filler. For through holes, reinforce the supplied repair fabric with leather glue to create a load-bearing base. Allow to dry completely.

Step 4: Tinting with Leather Fresh leather dye. Shake the bottle vigorously, apply the dye to the applicator sponge, and apply in dabbing motions — never brush. Brushing immediately creates visible streaks because the water-based paint dries within seconds. After each thin layer, dry with a hot air dryer on a moderate setting until the water has evaporated. Two to four thin layers are sufficient for full coverage.

Step 5: Sealing with Leather Shield. After at least 24 hours of curing time, ideally the next day. Apply friction-free and sparingly with a soft cloth — the sealant lays down a protective sacrificial layer that absorbs jean dye transfer and daily friction before it reaches the fresh tint.

Step 6: Conditioning with Leather Protector. For older leather and convertible seats, work in the care product with medical care oil — it penetrates the fibers, slows down drying out, and protects against fading of the fresh pigments with built-in UV filters and antioxidants. The professional recommendation from the leather care range: rather one thin layer more than one thick one.

Aniline, Alcantara, and Bycast are Excluded

The set is chemically precisely calibrated for pigmented smooth leather with a clear top coat layer. Applying it to incompatible material can ruin a seat cushion in one minute, which costs a lot of money to re-cover. Four strict limits to check before any repair.

First limit: Aniline leather, semi-aniline, nubuck, and open-pored suede. These types of leather do not have a factory top coat — the open pores absorb cleaner and leather dye like a sponge, stick together, and become irreversibly stained. If pigmented smooth leather with a closed surface → Complete Leather Repair Set. If open-pored aniline or nubuck leather → COLOURLOCK Aniline & Nubuck Cleaner as a specialized alternative from the same manufacturer line.

Second limit: Alcantara and microfiber fabrics. The binders in the leather dye and the synthetic fats in the Leather Protector permanently bond the fine fiber tips. Alcantara loses its typical suede feel and becomes dull. Third limit: plastic-coated split leather. On these synthetic coatings, the leather fat is not absorbed and remains as a sticky film on the surface. Fourth limit: worn-out material without a load-bearing fiber structure. In the case of deeply torn seat bolsters without a stable inner core, a combination of liquid leather and tint will sooner or later break open again — then the only way is to an upholsterer.

In the GTÜ test, the Smooth Leather Care Set Mild received a rating of 1.8 and was the only one of the twelve tested products to achieve the maximum score in the application category. For frequent driver steering wheels or sports seat bolsters, the tint will still wear off again after 12 to 24 months — this is a physical limitation of a water-based paint without additional hardener, not an application error. An honest ordering hurdle: if the remaining leather is heavily faded by UV, the factory color code no longer exactly matches the actual seat color — then sending a physical leather sample is mandatory for a color-identical mix.

For Detailers, Upholsterers, and Ambitious Restoration Professionals

The Repair Set is intended for workshops, used car detailers, upholsterer toolboxes, and ambitious classic and youngtimer owners who want to repeat repair and tinting in a calculable workflow. For the selective weekend care of new leather, it is oversized.

Detailing businesses calculate economically: a worn steering wheel noticeably lowers the perceived value of a vehicle in an advertisement. The smart repair treatment with the set takes 60 to 90 minutes of active time plus drying breaks. Classic and youngtimer owners appreciate the Leather Protector with medical care oil for patina preservation — it is acid-free and is also used in museum conservation.

However, if only color refreshment without structural repair is needed, the COLOURLOCK Complete Colour Set is more cost-effective per vehicle, because liquid leather is not included but complementary sealants are. The simple if-then logic: Repair Set for combined structural damage plus tinting, Color Set for pure color smart repairs on multiple seats.

A second truth that professional detailers know: successful restoration is 80 percent preparation and 20 percent tinting. Those who thoroughly complete the degreasing phase and build up the tint in thin layers with blow-drying achieve a result that is convincing even in daylight. Those who are sloppy or apply too thickly will see streaks at the first ray of sunshine and will have to rework for the next few hours.

The insider trick from detailing practice, which the official instructions do not formulate so clearly: liquid leather can hardly be sanded without flattening the leather pores. Professionals use a solvent-based GLD pen instead of sanding grit — it minimally re-dissolves the surface of the dried liquid leather and creates invisible transitions to the old leather. For heavily structured areas, fine sandpaper with a grit of 1000 additionally replaces the rigid sanding pad to preserve the original grain. Combined with blow-drying between each individual tinting layer, this is the difference between a six-month restoration and one that lasts two years on the entry bolster.

Frequently Asked Questions about the COLOURLOCK Complete Leather Repair Set

What is included in the COLOURLOCK Complete Leather Repair Set?

The complete set bundles six functional modules: a gentle Cleaner Mild for pre-cleaning, a dissolving Degreaser, flexible Liquid Leather for filling deep cracks, Leather Fresh leather dye for re-coloring, Leather Shield as a sealant, and Leather Protector with medical-grade conditioning oil. Also included are tools such as an applicator sponge, brush, sanding pad, repair cloth, and viscose cloth.

How do I repair cracks in leather with the set?

First, thoroughly clean and degrease until the top coat is dull. Fill deep cracks flush with Liquid Leather; for through-holes, reinforce with repair fabric and leather glue underneath. After drying, re-color with Leather Fresh leather dye in two to four thin layers, warm-drying each layer with a heat gun until opaque.

What is the difference to the COLOURLOCK Complete Colour Set?

The Complete Colour Set focuses on pure color smart repairs without structural repair and includes additional sealants for multiple seats. The Repair Set additionally bundles Liquid Leather for filling deep cracks — choose the Repair Set for combined structural damage plus tinting, and the Colour Set for pure color refreshers.

Is the set suitable for aniline leather or Alcantara?

No. Aniline leather, nubuck, and suede have no top coat — the open pores absorb cleaners and leather dye and bond irreversibly. For open-pored leather types, the COLOURLOCK Aniline & Nubuck Cleaner is the right choice. Alcantara and microfiber fabrics lose their suede-like feel due to the binders.

What happens if I skip the degreasing step?

Water-based leather dye will not adhere to greasy surfaces. The tint will peel off within two to six weeks — the most common cause of complaints. After using Cleaner Mild, it is imperative to rub with the Degreaser until the surface is dull and slightly tacky to the touch. Only then can the color layer adhere.

How long does the repair last on the steering wheel?

On steering wheels used by frequent drivers or sports seat bolsters, 12 to 24 months, after which a refresh is necessary — the physical limit of a water-based paint without additional hardeners. On less stressed seating surfaces, the result lasts two to three years. Preparation and a thin layer build-up determine the durability measurably more than the material itself.

Application of the COLOURLOCK Complete Leather Repair Set

Six steps from tear to carefully restored seat bolster

The set follows a fixed workflow, which is non-negotiable in this order. First, fill the Mild Cleaner into the foam dispenser, apply it with a leather brush or sponge, and work it in for 30 to 60 seconds in seam-to-seam movements. Remove with a damp viscose cloth — never use microfiber cloths from paint detailing, as they scratch the protective top-coat layer.

Before dyeing, degrease with the Degreaser on a lint-free cloth. Rub the top-coat until the surface is visibly dull and slightly sticky to the touch. This dissolving is a prerequisite for the new color layer to adhere. For heavily ingrained hand grease residues on the steering wheel, this step can take five to ten minutes. Gently break rough edges and protruding fibers with the sanding pad, and vacuum sanding dust.

Deeper cracks or breaks are smoothly filled with Liquid Leather — for through-holes, reinforce the repair fabric with leather glue underneath to create a load-bearing base. Allow to dry completely. Then, shake the Leather Fresh leather dye vigorously, apply it to the applicator sponge, and dab it in circular, stamping movements — never spread, as this immediately creates streaks. After each thin layer, dry with a hot air gun on a moderate setting until the water has evaporated. Two to four thin layers are sufficient for full coverage.

After at least 24 hours of curing — ideally the next day — apply Leather Shield sparingly to the dyed areas with a soft cloth as a friction-free sealant. For older leathers or convertible seats, the Leather Protector with medicinal care oil, UV filters, and antioxidants completes the workflow and conditions the fibers against drying out.

Notes: The set is calibrated for pigmented smooth leather with a clear top-coat layer. Aniline leather, nubuck, suede, Alcantara, and plastic-coated split leather are excluded — the open pores or synthetic coatings prevent adhesion or destroy the fibers. Processing only at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees, sensitive to frost. On heavily used steering wheels or sports seat bolsters, the dye will wear off after 12 to 24 months and needs to be refreshed — a physical limit, not an application error. For structural breaks without a load-bearing fiber structure, consult a saddler. Store cool and dry between 5 and 30 degrees; original seal preserves the color.
