What is the TUGA Chemie "Wheels" cleaning set? A build-your-own kit: one of the two TUGA wheel cleaners plus the matching tool if you want it — 20 percent off whatever you pick. Not meant for tyre sidewalls, painted bodywork or motorbikes.
The TUGA Chemie "Wheels" cleaning set is a configurable wheel cleaner set: you pick a cleaner — the acid-free Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® (green) for regular upkeep or the acidic Aluminium-Teufel® (red) for baked-on brake dust — in 1 litre or 5 litres. Then add the Detailing wheel brush, the wheel brush, or both. Whatever you put together costs 20 percent less than buying it separately.
Why two parts at all? Because brake dust comes in two layers. Braking takes the system up to 800 degrees, glowing iron particles hit the wheel and sinter into the top layer of clearcoat. Chemistry dissolves that iron layer — 75 to 85 percent of the grime if you wash weekly.
What is left behind is traffic film: a grey haze of oil, tyre rubber and road dust that clings to the surface electrostatically and does not react to any cleaner. Which means the last 15 to 25 percent only comes off with bristles. That is exactly what the tool in the set is for.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The most expensive mistake with wheel gel is laying on too much of it. Whatever runs down the face and drips out of the barrel never reacted with brake dust — it is simply gone. Put on enough to cover the surface evenly, and work bottom to top so runs do not dry on while you are still spraying the upper section.
On a 19 inch spoked wheel that is about 30 millilitres, not double. We regularly see customers here in Nordhorn who empty the litre bottle after four washes and wonder about the coverage — nearly always it is the amount, not the product.
The routine is the same for both cleaners: spray the cold wheel, let it dwell, work it mechanically, rinse top to bottom with a strong jet. Only the dwell time differs, and it differs a lot.
With the green Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® you give it 3 to 5 minutes. It tells you when it is done: the gel turns red-violet as soon as it binds iron out of the brake dust — a chemical indicator instead of a stopwatch. In practice that means you neither rinse too early nor leave the cleaner sitting for no reason.
The gel itself is thixotropic: it thins out and atomises as you spray, then stiffens again the moment it hits the vertical face. So it stays where the dirt is instead of running down into the barrel. TUGA Chemie has been developing and filling this formula at its own site in Osnabrück for decades.
The red Aluminium-Teufel® gets 1 to 2 minutes maximum, and here there is no colour change — the red is pure cosmetics. With no visual signal you work to the clock, not to feel. The manufacturer also calls for a clear water pre-rinse before the red one. That has a second reason once bristles come into play: loose grit acts like sandpaper under a brush.
Which tool you reach for follows the wheel geometry, not taste. On closed aero wheels you cannot get into the barrel at all — there the detailing brush does the work on the face, edges and valve. With a deep barrel or a concave design you need the length of the wheel brush. Multi-spoke and Y-spoke wheels want both; a classic five-spoke gets by on the wheel brush alone.
Both tools hold up across the full pH range and are built metal-free — the ferrule is plastic, the brush's wire core is thickly sheathed. You can tell because there is no bare metal edge anywhere near the clearcoat. One detailer in the community puts the common worry plainly: "Felgenbürsten mit Kunststoffborsten meide ich mittlerweile, damit habe ich meine vier mattschwarzen Felgen zerkratzt."
The answer to that is not the brush, it is lubrication. Never brush a wheel dry — there has to be enough gel or shampoo water standing on the surface for the bristles to glide instead of grind.
The key decision in this set is not the tool, it is the wheel finish. The green cleaner is cleared everywhere; the red one comes with hard bans.
| Wheel finish | Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® (green) | Aluminium-Teufel® (red) |
|---|---|---|
| Clearcoated, intact | cleared | cleared |
| Powder-coated | cleared | cleared |
| Polished or bare | cleared | off limits |
| Anodised | cleared | off limits |
| Chrome | cleared | off limits |
| Multi-piece | cleared | off limits |
| Stainless steel | cleared | off limits |
| Matte paint | cleared | off limits |
| Motorbike and scooter | cleared | off limits |
If you look after your wheels every one to three weeks, the green one is your pick — permanently. If brake dust has been baking on for months and the pH-neutral option no longer gets through on the second pass, the red one is the tool for that single job. Then back to green.
A detailer on a car care forum sums it up: "Dieser starke Reiniger ist nichts für die regelmäßigen Waschfreunde, dann lieber den milden grünen." That is exactly how the set is meant to work — the red one is not a better green one, it is a different tool for a different state.
Three limits are worth knowing. The active ingredient in the green cleaner has a distinct sulphur smell; other makers cover that with fragrance, TUGA does not. The indicator also reacts with bare cast iron and briefly puts flash rust on the brake disc — it disappears with the first hard stop, but it looks rough until then.
The third limit is the trigger. Thick gel comes out of a standard trigger more as a jet than a fine mist, and after four big wheels your index finger knows about it. If you work on wheels often, decant into a pump sprayer. With the red cleaner the acid also attacks the spring inside the trigger head — rinse it through with clear water after every use.
What the wheel cleaner set is not for is anything that is not a wheel. Tar and bitumen do not react chemically with the green one's active ingredient; you need a tar remover for that. Tyre sidewalls are out too — that is a job for a tyre cleaner.
Day-to-day, the most common damage we see comes from exactly one direction: the red cleaner ends up on a polished or multi-piece wheel. The milky white haze that follows can only be worked out with a sisal wheel and metal polish — about two hours per wheel, if it works at all.
Reckon on about 30 millilitres of gel per wheel and 120 millilitres per set of four. That more or less decides the size for you in this wheel cleaner set: 1 litre for one car, 5 litres from the second one on.
The 1 litre bottle comes ready to go with a trigger head and lasts a full season if you give the wheels a proper wash every four weeks. The 5 litre canister is the size for multi-car households, for detailers washing weekly, and for anyone decanting into a pump sprayer anyway.
Once opened, both cleaners stay fully reactive for 24 months if you store them dark and frost-free. Keep the acidic red one away from alkaline cleaners and off a cold concrete floor.
The Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® is the second best selling wheel cleaner in our shop over the last 90 days across all brands, with 42 orders. The set components carry 13 verified Trusted Shops reviews, averaging 4.8 out of 5. Jörg wrote to us after his order: "Reinigt Felgen in 2 Minuten und reinigt auch die Bremsanlage."
If you want less work long term, follow up with a wheel sealant — on a sealed wheel the brake dust only sits on the surface, and the wash drops from five to seven minutes per wheel to under two. If nothing in this set fits your wheel design, our brushes and detailing brushes cover more shapes.
One moment is worth catching: when the summer wheels come off in autumn. Stored unwashed, the leftover brake dust keeps eating into the clearcoat undisturbed for six months — the trade calls it baking on at standstill, and by spring it is no longer a cleaning job but a polishing one.
And if you want to know whether your wheel is actually clean, do the test that ends every argument about tools: after rinsing, run a finger through the barrel. Black finger, and chemistry worked alone. Clean finger, and you used the brush.
Not sure about TUGA Chemie TUGA Chemie "Wheels" Cleaning Set? Get it explained:
You put the set together yourself. A wheel cleaner is mandatory: the acid-free Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® (green) or the acidic Aluminium-Teufel® (red), each in 1 litre or 5 litres. The Detailing wheel brush, the wheel brush or both are optional. You get 20 percent off whatever combination you pick.
The green Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® works for 3 to 5 minutes. It tells you when it is done: the gel turns red-violet as soon as it binds iron out of the brake dust. The red Aluminium-Teufel® gets 1 to 2 minutes maximum and has no colour change — here you work to the clock.
Green for regular upkeep, on any wheel type. Red for brake dust baked on over months on intact painted wheels, as a one-off rather than a routine. In the AUTO ZEITUNG wheel cleaner test the green one came out on top of eleven cleaners, with 91 out of 100 points.
The green Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® yes — it is acid-free at pH 7 to 8 and cleared for alloy, chrome, anodised, diamond-cut, powder-coated and multi-piece wheels and for TPMS sensors. The red Aluminium-Teufel® no: on polished, bare, anodised, chrome, multi-piece or matte material it is explicitly off limits.
As the water evaporates out of the solution, the acid concentration on the surface climbs sharply. On unprotected aluminium you get milky white runs and the shine gives way to a dull texture. On clearcoat, too long a dwell causes hazing. So stick to 1 to 2 minutes, cold wheel, shade.
Every one to three weeks with the green cleaner, and the brake dust never gets a chance to stick. At about 30 millilitres per wheel, one litre covers roughly eight sets of four — a whole season. The most important date is the autumn wheel change, before they go into storage.
The wheel has to be cold and dry. After a motorway run that takes a good 15 minutes — on a hot wheel or in full sun the water in the cleaner flashes off in seconds, the active ingredient stays behind highly concentrated and etches in. Always work in the shade.
Spray the cleaner on evenly from 15 to 20 centimetres, working bottom to top so runs do not dry on while you are still spraying the upper section. About 30 millilitres covers an 18 to 20 inch wheel. Laying on more buys you nothing — whatever drips out of the barrel never reacted with brake dust.
With the green Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® you wait 3 to 5 minutes until the gel has turned red-violet. That colour change is your cue to rinse. The red Aluminium-Teufel® gets a hard 1 to 2 minutes by the clock — it has no indicator, and every extra minute works against the wheel. Give the wheel a clear water pre-rinse before the red cleaner.
Now the tool. The wheel brush covers the barrel and the gaps between spokes, the Detailing wheel brush takes spoke roots, the hub, the bolt holes and the valve area. Important: never brush dry — there has to be enough gel or shampoo water on the surface for the bristles to glide instead of grind.
Finish by rinsing top to bottom with a strong jet until no reddish haze runs off any more. Do not forget the back of the wheel and the deep barrel — anything left there gets flung onto the tyre sidewall and bodywork by centrifugal force once you drive.
Notes: The green Alu-Teufel "Spezial"® is cleared for every wheel type, including polished, anodised, chrome and multi-piece wheels as well as TPMS sensors. The red Aluminium-Teufel® is strictly for intact painted or powder-coated steel and alloy wheels — on polished, bare, anodised, chrome, multi-piece or matte material and on two-wheelers the acid leaves irreversible damage. Wear protective gloves with both cleaners, plus eye protection with the red one. Rinse the red cleaner's trigger head through with clear water after every use or the spring inside will corrode. Neither cleaner reacts with tar or bitumen — you need a tar remover for that. Store both containers dark, frost-free and away from alkaline cleaners; 24 months once opened.
