  • Strong leather cleaner from COLOURLOCK makes greasy leather matte again

What is the strong leather cleaner from COLOURLOCK? The intensive level of leather cleaning for heavily soiled, pigmented smooth leather: COLOURLOCK "Leather Cleaner" (Strong) dissolves body oils, greasy shine, and old care product residues from steering wheels, seat bolsters, and entry areas without damaging the color layer. Developed from leather repair practice, now under the umbrella of Koch-Chemie.

The strong leather cleaner from COLOURLOCK is the cleaning stage for cases where the mild routine no longer works: greasy steering wheels, oily seat bolsters, smooth leather that hasn't been cleaned in years. COLOURLOCK "Leather Cleaner" (Strong) dissolves body oils, abrasion, and used care product films from the surface of pigmented smooth leather, leaving behind the matte, grippy factory look. It is backed by the repair expertise of the Lederzentrum since 1995 — the cleaning here is so thorough that no recoloring is necessary afterward.

    • Dissolves what the mild routine leaves behind. Body oils, sunscreen, denim abrasion, and old care residues condense over months into a shiny film that a mild cleaner only redistributes. The surfactants in the Strong break down this film and bind it in the foam — the grease ends up in the cloth, not spread across the surface.
    • Developed from leather repair, since 1995. COLOURLOCK originated in the leather center, where greasy steering wheels and oily seat bolsters have been landing on the table for three decades. The strong cleaning level is the first step of every refurbishment there — calibrated so that the color layer survives the deep cleaning unscathed.
    • Two containers, two usage profiles. The 250 ml bottle covers steering wheels, gear knobs, and individual problem areas; the 1000 ml / 1 liter covers complete seat sets and leather furniture. Those who thoroughly degrease once and then maintain with mild products afterward will find the small bottle goes surprisingly far.

Practical tip from Detailing1: The most expensive mistake when degreasing is being mechanical rather than chemical. A tip circulating in forums involves using a magic eraser on the steering wheel — the eraser abrades the color layer along with the grease: first, the spot becomes matte, then light, and then it is a case for recoloring. We regularly receive inquiries about steering wheels that have become patchy after such a treatment. The safe way: Apply COLOURLOCK "Leather Cleaner" (Strong) to a soft leather brush or pad — never directly onto the leather —, work the foam in short strokes, and remove it with a slightly damp cloth. For persistent greasy shine, a second pass is a better lever than more pressure.

Greasy shine is grease in the top layer, not dust on top

A steering wheel doesn't get dirty like a floor mat, it gets greasy — and that is a different process. Modern automotive leathers have a wafer-thin PU top layer, a paint-like color and protective skin over the actual leather. Skin oils, sunscreen, and hand cream deposit into the microstructures of this layer trip by trip, bind with dust and abrasion, and condense into the shiny film everyone knows: first on the grip zones of the steering wheel, then on seat bolsters, armrests, and entry edges.

This is exactly why normal wiping helps so little. A damp cloth picks up the loose layer and leaves the condensed grease film behind — after drying, the surface shines just as it did before. Anyone who rubs harder then just polishes the film to a shine instead of dissolving it. The shine is therefore not a sign of insufficient cleaning, but a sign that the cleaning chemistry chosen was one level too weak.

The time factor works against you. Fresh skin oil lies in the top layer and can be easily dissolved chemically; over months, it migrates deeper and takes dirt with it — the dark, softly shining edges on light-colored seat bolsters are exactly this. What is a single cleaning pass today will be a case for special products next year. That is why heavily soiled smooth leather should be cleaned while the residue is still sitting on top.

Aside from the look, greasy shine has a functional side: A greasy steering wheel rim loses grip, and hands are more likely to slip during quick steering movements. The matte, slightly dull surface of a freshly cleaned leather steering wheel is not a cosmetic issue — it is the condition for which the steering wheel was designed.

The strong leather cleaner does not replace the mild one

COLOURLOCK separates leather cleaning into two stages, and this separation is the actual buying guide. The mild leather cleaner handles the routine: dust, light signs of wear, the semi-annual round before care. The Strong handles the past — everything that has condensed over months and years and no longer responds to the mild formula.

The if-then logic is simple. If your leather is cleaned regularly and only looks dull and dusty: mild. If surfaces shine, edges have become dark, the steering wheel is greasy, or you are thoroughly refurbishing a used car for the first time: COLOURLOCK "Leather Cleaner" (Strong). Also, before the first care of long-neglected leather and especially before any recoloring, a deep clean with the strong level is required — neither care products nor color will adhere to grease. This is the reason why this step is never skipped in repair practice: every subsequent layer is only as good as the substrate underneath.

From the Detailing1 everyday life, we can categorize the frequency well: most interiors need the Strong exactly once — for the initial deep cleaning. After that, the mild cleaner maintains the level, and the strong bottle goes back on the shelf until a steering wheel shines again. A strong cleaner on a weekly basis would be the wrong signal: then either the routine is too infrequent or the grease is sitting deeper than cleaning chemistry can reach.

Within the leather cleaners from COLOURLOCK, the Strong is thus the tool for the exceptional case, not for the calendar. For open-pored and rough leathers, the series carries its own, significantly more cautious formula — more on that below, because this boundary is the most important of the whole category.

The foam dissolves the grease, not your pressure

The application follows a principle from detailing: let chemistry do the work, dose the mechanics. The cleaner goes onto a soft leather brush, a cleaning pad, or a cloth — never directly onto the leather, otherwise it will soak in locally and leave rims. Work into a lather with light pressure in short, overlapping strokes, let the foam work for a moment, then remove with a clean, slightly damp cloth. The surfactants in it — molecules with a water-loving and a grease-loving end — decouple the grease from the top layer and keep it suspended in the foam. This means for you: the dirt ends up in the cloth, not in the next corner of the seat.

Work section by section over large areas. One seat surface, then remove; one bolster, then remove — this way you see on the cloth how much is actually coming out, and the loosened dirt does not dry back on. For a complete seat set, you can easily plan on an hour for the first time. The deep cleaning is the most time-consuming step of the entire leather care process, and it feels that way too — that is normal and not a sign that something is going wrong.

The steering wheel demands the most patience because the film is thickest there. Better two or three short passes with fresh foam than one long one with pressure — after each pass, the cloth shows whether grease is still coming out. For perforated leather, work sparingly so that no liquid stands in the holes. Finish the seams with an almost dry cloth: dissolved dirt likes to collect in the recesses again.

Two framework conditions play a role. On heated leather, the foam dries before the surfactants can take effect — in summer, therefore, work in the shade or with the door open and let the surface reach room temperature first. And after the last pass, the leather needs a drying break before the care is applied: residual moisture in the top layer is, in our practice, the most common cause for cloudiness and matte spots under freshly applied care. Those who clean the set in the evening and apply care the next morning are on the safe side; it goes faster with a half-hour waiting time and a dry microfiber cloth as a counter-check — if it remains dry, the care can go on.

The Strong dissolves skin oils. Not deeply ingrained grease.

A strong cleaner works in the top layer — and that is exactly where its territory ends. Grease that has migrated through the color layer into the leather itself over years can no longer be reached by cleaning chemistry from the outside. The typical candidates: softly shining zones on headrests, seat bolsters, and steering wheel rims of high-mileage cars. For this case, COLOURLOCK has its own path — the COLOURLOCK "Grease Absorber Paste" from the grease remover category slowly draws ingrained grease out of the leather via absorption instead of trying to wash it off.

Boundary two is the leather type. The Strong is made for pigmented, surface-dyed smooth leather — those with the protective color layer. Open-pored aniline leather and rough leather like nubuck soak up cleaning liquid like blotting paper; there, surfactants and moisture can cause stains and dark rims. For these leathers, there is a separate, much gentler cleaner: COLOURLOCK "Aniline & Nubuck Cleaner". The water drop test tells you beforehand what you are dealing with: If the drop beads up, your leather has the top layer and the Strong can be used. If it soaks in and darkens the spot, keep the bottle closed.

We frequently see a third confusion: dark edges on light-colored seat bolsters, which are mistaken for dirt — in reality, the color layer has already been rubbed through there. No cleaner brings back rubbed-off color; at this point, cleaning ends and the repair and coloring line from COLOURLOCK takes over. The practical test for this is unspectacular: first clean a small, inconspicuous spot. If color comes off on the cloth, it is no longer soiling, but a color defect.

A strong cleaner takes the old care with it right away

What makes the Strong strong also makes it thorough against its own product range: besides grease and dirt, it also dissolves the remains of old care products — and that is intentional. Resinous, thickly applied care films are part of the greasy shine problem, and no fresh care adheres to them. After the deep cleaning, the leather is therefore bare: clean, matte, and without the thin protective film that cared-for leather wears.

That is why cleaning and care belong together like washing and sealing for paint. After the Strong, pigmented smooth leather needs leather care that rebuilds the protective film — applied thinly, with UV protection, excess removed after about ten minutes. What we at Detailing1 observe time and again: exactly this second step is often postponed after a successful deep cleaning. The freshly cleaned, unprotected leather then attracts new dirt faster than before, and two weeks later the cleaner seems ineffective — even though it was just the care that was missing.

Those starting from zero don't have to search for the building blocks individually: the cleaning & care sets from COLOURLOCK combine cleaner and care according to the age and condition of the leather — the orderly path from greasy to protected, without missing a single component.

250 ml is enough for the steering wheel, the liter for the set

The container question is answered by your usage profile. If your topic is steering wheels, gear knobs, and individual problem areas, the 250 ml bottle will last a long time — the areas are small, and it only takes a few milliliters of foam per pass. For complete seat sets, used car refurbishment, or leather furniture in the house, the 1000 ml / 1 liter bottle is the right size: the deep cleaning of an entire set consumes noticeably more product than any subsequent routine round.

Equally honest in the other direction: if your leather is cared for and only carries the normal everyday layer, you don't need the strong level yet — then the mild leather cleaner is the right choice, and the Strong remains the tool in reserve. Overview of all cleaning levels of the brand: Back to leather cleaners from COLOURLOCK.

And the punchline of the strong level: the best yardstick for the Strong is how rarely you need it. Degrease thoroughly once, then clean mildly and apply care thinly twice a year — then the bottle stays half full and your leather stays matte nonetheless. Greasy shine comes from everyday life, not from the leather. Anyone who sticks to the routine after the initial deep cleaning won't see it again.
