COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh sets bundle color refreshment for pigmented smooth leather: water-based polyurethane tint including application materials, available as a compact format for steering wheels or seat bolsters, as a one-liter container for entire sets, or as a three-stage system consisting of cleaner, tint, and protector. The factory color Black is included ready-to-use; other shades are created using the neutral base. Not for aniline leather, nubuck, or deep cracks.

  • Recolor faded seat bolsters with COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh sets

What are COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh sets? Pre-assembled coloring kits for pigmented smooth leather: water-based polyurethane dye plus application materials — available as a compact format for a single damaged area, professional containers for entire interior sets, or as a complete sequence including cleaner, dye, and protection.

COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh sets are curated coloring kits for worn, faded smooth leather — containing dye, sponges, and gloves in one box, with additional cleaning and protection products depending on the set. The core is always the same water-based polyurethane dispersion: color-fast pigments in a flexible binder that crosslinks upon drying to form a satin-matte color film on the leather surface. The sets differ in quantity and how much of the application sequence they include.

    • The color becomes part of the surface rather than a coating on top. The polyurethane dispersion crosslinks under warm air to form an elastic polymer film that moves with the leather — similar to a lacquer film that stretches with the fiber instead of cracking over it. You can tell by this: the treated seat bolster wrinkles when you get in just like the surrounding leather, without the color tearing at the crease.
    • Two container sizes for two completely different tasks. 100 ml of dye covers a single project — one complete steering wheel or two heavily worn seat bolsters. The liter in the large set is enough for six to ten complete interiors in the identical color shade, without needing to change batches in the middle of a project.
    • A set saves you a trip back to the shelf. Anyone who only buys a bottle of dye will face the question of what else is missing at the latest when it comes time to degrease. The sets come with application sponges and nitrile gloves; the three-stage set also includes cleaner and protection — so the order of operations is set before the first drop touches the leather.

Pro-tip from Detailing1: The mistake we encounter most frequently in inquiries about Leather Fresh happens before coloring: the leather is cleaned but not degreased — and three weeks later, the dye peels off the entry edge in thin flakes. Every steering wheel and seat bolster has an invisible film of skin oils, sunscreen, and old care lotion that a mild leather cleaner won't remove. The check takes ten seconds: after degreasing, press a piece of masking tape onto the surface and peel it off slowly. If it sticks firmly, the surface is ready. If it peels off easily, there is still grease underneath and you need to clean it again. This test is in no data sheet, but it determines whether your work lasts three weeks or three years.

A set provides the sequence, not just the color

Leather coloring rarely fails because of the color. It fails because of what happens before and after.

That is exactly why COLOURLOCK assembles Leather Fresh dye into sets rather than selling it only as a single bottle. The dye is step four of a five-step process: clean, degrease, smooth, dye, seal. Anyone who buys only the color has to put together the other four steps themselves — and in practice, usually skips exactly the one that makes the difference.

The sets handle this assembly for you. The compact format contains the dye, a fine-pored application sponge, and nitrile gloves; the large format adds cleaning and application sponges. The three-stage set goes further, including a mild leather cleaner for the pre-cleaning and a Protector for the finish. For you, this means: you decide once at the beginning how deep you want to go, instead of having to reorder three times in the middle of the project.

The second, underestimated advantage is color consistency. Dye from one container is dye from one batch. Anyone coloring one seat bolster today and the second in four months from a new bottle may see a minimal shift in critical colors — in the set container, this question does not arise. For the same reason, professional detailers prefer the liter over ten small bottles.

XS, XL, and C & P handle three different tasks

Three sets, three clearly separated tasks — and none of them is just a smaller or larger version of the others.

The COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh Set XS" is the smart-repair package for exactly one project. 100 ml of dye in factory color F034 Black, a fine-pored sponge, two nitrile gloves. The kit is designed for one complete steering wheel or two heavily used seat bolsters. If only small contact areas need color rather than entire bolsters, the same amount can cover a complete interior — the dye is applied spot-wise to the worn zones, never over the entire seat.

The COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh Set XL" is the opposite of a single-case solution. A liter of dye, cleaning and application sponges, nitrile gloves: enough material for six to ten complete interiors in the same shade. This pays off as soon as you regularly process lease returns, used cars before sale, or multiple vehicles in the same color family.

The COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh C & P Set" is a different configuration: not more quantity, but more of the sequence. Mild leather cleaner for pre-cleaning, the Leather Fresh dye, and a Leather Protector with UV filter for the finish. It is the set for anyone coloring for the first time who doesn't want to realize at the second step that something is missing. Available in the factory color Black or with a neutral base if your shade needs to be custom-mixed.

All three can be found in our COLOURLOCK color sets category, along with larger complete sets for full restorations. If you only want to maintain your leather and not color it, you're in the right place one level further up: the care sets by leather age solve the case where the color is still intact and only the fiber is dry.

Factory color or neutral base decides before the set size

The first question isn't how much you need. It's which shade.

F034 Black is the factory color that comes pre-assembled in the sets, and it covers the typical black tones of German premium brands without any mixing required. Black is therefore the simplest case: open the set, shake, color. For everything else, COLOURLOCK maintains a vehicle-specific color database, from which shades like BMW-Brown or Mercedes-Beige are mixed according to the original code.

Anyone who wants to handle the shade themselves works with the Leather Fresh Neutral bases. They come colorless and are brought to the target shade with pigment — and they also determine something that many only notice after drying: the gloss level. The bases are available in matte, standard, and glossy. A dashboard that is matte from the factory will reveal a glossily touched-up bolster from two meters away. In our consultations, the gloss level is chosen incorrectly much more often than the color shade — after drying, it cannot be corrected without rebuilding the layer.

For container size, there is a simple calculation. If you are coloring one spot on one vehicle, the compact set is the right format — opened dye thickens over six to twelve months and loses the exact fluidity necessary for a streak-free finish. A liter that sits open for two years is not saving money. If you are coloring multiple vehicles in the same color, the ratio flips.

And if you are unsure whether your leather needs to be colored at all: rub a white, slightly damp cloth over the worn area. If color stays on the cloth, the pigment layer is gone and the dye is the right way to go. If the cloth only stays dirty, you don't need color application, but rather a leather cleaner first.

Clean, degrease, dye, seal. In this order.

This sequence has been a detailer standard for decades and applies identically to every set.

First, deep cleaning with a mild leather cleaner, or the strong version for greasy leather: apply foam, work in for 30 to 60 seconds with a soft leather brush, remove with a damp cloth, let dry. Then the step that almost everyone underestimates — degreasing with a degreaser or leather cleaning naphtha until the surface is visibly matte. The masking tape test from the pro-tip is the check for this.

Raised fibers on the worn area should be gently smoothed with a leather sanding pad without applying pressure. Deep cracks or broken bolsters should be filled beforehand — that is the job of the leather fillers, not the dye.

Then you color. Shake the bottle vigorously until pigment and binder are homogeneous. Apply color to the sponge, never directly to the leather. Dab paper-thin from seam to seam and crosslink each layer immediately with a hair dryer on a medium setting from about 20 centimeters away for 60 to 90 seconds — only heat drives out the water and closes the polymer film. Opacity is achieved through three to five paper-thin repetitions. If you try to force it in one thick layer, you will get bubbles and a rough, rubbing finish. If using the liter container, pour it into a small dosage bottle beforehand; dabbing directly from the canister is almost uncontrollable in the footwell.

Finally, 24 hours of rest. Only then comes the protection — the Protector is included in the three-stage set, otherwise you can find it under leather sealant. Apply without pressure, do not rub: fresh polymer layers will dissolve otherwise. For a seat bolster, plan for a good hour the first time; from the second time on, it will take half that.

Where the dye reaches its limit

A color film is not a repair filler, and it doesn't fit every leather.

The hard limit is open-pored leather. Aniline, nubuck, suede, and Alcantara do not have a factory protective layer — the water-based dispersion soaks into the pores uncontrollably and leaves behind dark, patchy zones that cannot be cleaned away. The water drop test decides in 30 seconds: if the drop soaks in and darkens the spot, the sets are off-limits. If it beads up, the leather is pigmented and you are in the right place.

The second limit is the lack of filling effect. The dye masks fine scratches and colors abraded areas cleanly, but it does not bridge a crack or a worn-through bolster. We deliberately tested this on a broken side bolster: the film lays over the break edge, looks fresh — and tears open again along the same line the first time you get in and out. Without filler as preparatory work, you won't win there.

The third limit is a color change. The sets are built for restoration, not for transformation. Changing a black interior to beige is a different procedure with different material. And even within restoration, light is the more strenuous task: while black often covers in the first pass, beige and cream tones need five to six layers over dark abrasion marks on the steering wheel. Anyone tackling a light interior should calculate double the work time and keep a second compact set ready, rather than standing there without material in the middle of the job.

A fourth limit lies in the pre-treatment: brake cleaner is not a degreaser. It attacks the factory protective layer and makes the leather brittle — damage that no dye can repair. In the community, this reach into the wrong shelf is documented regularly, usually in the same post where the user wonders why the color is peeling off.

Which Leather Fresh set fits your damage

Three questions lead to the right set, and none of them is how much color you want.

First question: Is this your first time coloring? Then take the COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh C & P Set". Cleaner, dye, and Protector from one source mean that you won't skip any step out of ignorance — and the Protector at the end is the part that first-timers most often omit.

Second question: Is it exactly one spot on exactly one car? Steering wheel, driver's seat bolster, entry edge — then the COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh Set XS" is the right quantity. Anything above that is material that will spoil on your shelf after thickening.

Third question: Multiple vehicles, same shade, ongoing need? Then the COLOURLOCK "Leather Fresh Set XL". One container, one batch, no color difference between job three and job seven. And if your shade isn't black, the path leads through the neutral bases and the appropriate gloss level before you decide on the size.

The point we have to counter most often in consultations: color is not the risk of this project. The preparation is. A cleanly cleaned, thoroughly degreased steering wheel will result in a finish with the smallest set in the line that you won't distinguish from the factory condition in daily use. A non-degreased steering wheel will be a project again after three weeks even with the liter container — only with more material left on the shelf.
